Prominent criminal lawyer R K Naseem, who was allegedly attacked by his brother-in-law and former BJP MLA Vinod Sharma, died at a hospital here this morning, his family said.
Naseem, who was the defence counsel in prominent cases like Jessica Lall murder and Priyadarshini Mattoo rape and murder, breathed his last at Mata Channan Devi hospital where he was undergoing treatment since January 24.
The lawyer was attacked on his head allegedly by Sharma on January 24. Sharma, his son Amit, who allegedly opened fire, and two of their employees were arrested earlier in this connection. Naseem had a property dispute with Sharma.
Naseem was the defense lawyer for Sushil Ansal, prime accused in the Uphaar fire tragedy case, and Santosh Kumar Singh, son of a police officer who was sentenced to death in the Priyadarshini Mattoo rape-cum-murder case.
He also appeared for IPS officer R K Sharma, accused in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case besides Manu Sharma who was convicted in the Jessica Lall murder case.
The attack on Naseem had triggered a controversy following allegations of mishandling of case by police. Following this, police transferred of the case to Crime Branch on January 27 besides transferring the Dabri SHO.
